The Big Man’s Brew - Volume Two

"World going mad out there
Throw away all of your treasured possessions
'Cause even the Royal Mail
Can't deliver us from what we've got into"

The Big Man’s Brew - Volume Two

01} Nat King Cole - When I Fall In Love [3:11]
Do I really need to comment on Nat King Cole? His music isn’t hokey or uncool. He is the benchmark for heartfelt, romantic music.

02} Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness [3:40]
Last time you were hit with a spacey, mellow Jimmy Eat World tune. “Sweetness” is a more boisterous ditty. It’s a little poppy, but still is relevant.

03} Placebo - Meds [3:01]
Placebo is a band that my little sister got me into. Their latest album, Meds, is one of the best records so far this year.

04} Whiskeytown - Avenues* [2:31]
Whiskeytown is Ryan Adams old band straight out of North Carolina. This song is a shining example of their music. Adams sings about the inner struggle of a guy trying to decide between a girl he’s sweet on, and the want to be among his friends chasing skirts. Sound simple enough? Some of you fellas know this is commonplace for a young guy struggling with becoming a adult male.

05} Patty Griffin - Long Ride Home [3:32]
Griffin is one of the best singer/songwriters around today. This is a perfect song to listen to on an extended trip in the country.

06} Blue Highway - I’ll Wait [6:18]
That’s right kiddies, this is a bluegrass cover of Van Halen’s “I’ll Wait.” The man can play a mandolin like Eddie can play a guitar. Even though this is a bluegrass tune, it still rings true alongside the original.

07} Peter Bradley Adams - Chant [4:29]
Peter’s former band, eastmountainsouth, had moderate success with the song “You Dance.” “Chant” is off of Peter’s first solo EP, aptly titled EP. It’s a really well done, uplifting tune.

08} Breaking Benjamin - Breakdown [3:36]
I bought Breaking Benjamin’s album We Are Not Alone solely because of the approximate 20 piano chords at the beginning of this song. They were looped on the website for the film Donnie Darko, and I was amazed by the chord arrangement. I realize I have a problem, but refuse medical help.

09} Steve Earle - Breed [2:46]
”Breed” is by far my favorite Nirvana song, but Earle’s version is better. It’s faster, rougher, tougher, ballsier, and just flat out eclipses the original. And I adore the original!

10} Addict - Nobody Knows [3:15]
Yes, this band sounds like a Bush rip off. Let’s look past that, and see exactly how bad ass this song is. The guitars, the drums, the pacing and pauses are all amazing.

11} Sevendust [f. Skin from Skunk Anansie] - Licking Cream* [3:19]
This is quite possibly the creepiest love song ever. Their lyrics will freak you out, but they are about the devotion between these two forces. Lajon’s vocals are top notch, but Skin’s will peel the paint off your walls.

12} Jucifer - Memphis [3:46]
This song was my introduction to the two-piece, Jucifer. Last night I attended their concert, and it was by far one of the weirdest, and yet best, shows I have ever attended. This smoldering, bass driven tune is not a defining song for them. They switch back and forth between rock, punk, metal, stoner rock, and true alternative music. They are one of the most original bands around.

13} Radiohead - Pyramid Song [4:54]
I know, I know, I know. Who hasn’t heard Radiohead. That’s not the point. This song is more than just another Radiohead tune. “Pyramid Song” exists on it’s own level. It’s not a standard rock tune. it’s part spacey rock, part jazz tune, part undefineable. It’ll make you ache to hear it over and over and over and over and over with a grand feeling of calm.

14} Rebelski - Magic Calculator [3:01]
Rebelski is Martin Rebelski, keyboardist for the British band Doves. He has crafted two remarkable albums that are not available here in the States.

15} David Gray - The Other Side [4:31]
Gray is best known for his 2000 hit “Babylon.” Since then his has made two wonderful albums; 2002’s A New Day At Midnight, and 2005’s Life In Slow Motion. Midnight was a little more gloomy, and Slow Motion was a lush effort. This is the starkest song from Slow Motion.

16} Kenna - Hell Bent* [4:54]
Kenna is out of Virginia, but was discovered via England. His album New Sacred Cow was available in England long before it was here in the States.

17} Deadman - When The Music’s Not Forgotten [4:16]
Another free download from iTunes that turned out to be great. The dynamic between the male and female vocals are tremendous.

18} Oh Susanna - Tangled and Wild [4:27]
I found this song through the movie Tully. “Tangled and Wild” is a astounding love tune straight from the heartland of America.

19} Jump, Little Children - Cathedrals [3:58]
My assistant at work thinks this song is wholly depressing. I think it’s beautiful song, that almost echoes Orwell’s 1984. But in a nice way.

20} Filter - Miss Blue [5:36]
This song showcases Filter’s softer side. Haven’t the foggiest what it is about. It almost seems to be about the singer’s girl friend committing suicide. I don’t know.

Until next time:
