The Big Man’s Brew - Volume Three

"Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums"

The Big Man’s Brew - Volume Three

01} Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye [5:54]
This tune is an early front-runner for 'Song Of The Year.' I love how it goes from the easy going opening, then about halfway through it transforms for a brief period into something in the opposite direction. The first time you hear it, it will completely take you off guard. Plus the entire album is fantastic. A lot of critics have been comparing them to Smashing Pumpkins. There's some similarities, the fuzziness of the guitar, that are obvious.

02} Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces [3:05]
This almost has the feel of an southern gospel hymn. That bouncy, happy feel will make you want to tap your feet and clap your hands. If you can't dance to this tune, then something's wrong. Or it could be that you're white, that's usually the problem. If my big ass can shimmy to this one, it wouldn't hurt you to move around a bit.

03} Blink 182- Easy Target [2:20]
04} Blink 182 [f. Robert Smith of The Cure] - All of This [4:40]
Alright before anyone starts, Blink 182 is an underestimated band. Sure their videos are goofy, but a ton of their songs have a deep meaning. They are somewhat the godfathers of emo. Some songs they wear their hearts on their sleeves. When Shakespeare does it, he's praised. When Blink 182 does it, that get thrown down on the kiddie level. The reason why there is two songs is because of the bridge between the two songs. When finishing "All of This" go back and listen to the similarities between the two tracks. They somewhat used the same groove on both tracks. It's interesting to hear two completely different angles of using the same base. Then there's the fact that Robert Smith kicks ass.

05} Doves - Far From Grace [4:26]
This is my favorite Doves track. It first appeared on a bonus CD that came with The Last Broadcast. I love how simple yet breathtaking it is. The only way I can describe "Far From Grace" is to say it has a warm feel to it.

06} The Twilight Singers - Powder Burns [5:52]
So far Powder Burns is the 'Album Of The Year.' The Sword's Age Of Winters is a close second, but Powder Burns is in front. For some reason it reminds me of Jeff Buckley's Grace. It may be the fact that I bought it based on recommendations, and it blew me completely away. They are both so much better than the hype that lead me to purchase them. The song "Powder Burns" is a good sampling of what's on the album Powder Burns.

07} Josh Ritter - Girl In The War [4:19]
Here's #2 'Song Of The Year.' There's just something about this song that hits me deep. It may be the simple guitar picking over the top of the gangsta bass line. I'm just not sure. It's a helluva tune, that's for sure.

08} INXS - By My Side [3:04]
Please stop laughing. INXS is one of those bands that I adore some of their tracks, but could do without others. That said, I firmly believe that Michael Hutchence is one of the best lead singers of all time. I found this song only recently, via commercials for USA's The Dead Zone.

09} Morphine - Wishing Well [3:32]
Morphine is the shit. The first Morphine tape I picked up was Like Swimming for 99¢ in 1997. I wore the damn thing out. The Night is one of my favorite albums of all time. There is no one that sounds like Morphine, nor will there ever be.

10} Raul Malo- Downbound Train [3:40]
Watch out Joe, this is a Bruce Springsteen tune. Raul Malo, of The Mavericks, takes this song to a whole 'nother level. I love the drums in the background. They make it such a great driving song. I especially like the part where they start building back up a little past halfway through. Awesome.

11} Stateside - Light Years Away [3:26]
Stateside is a band outta Nashville, but sound nothing like what you'd expect to come out of Nashville. There's no country-tinges in this one. It's damn near a straight up blues-rock tune. It has what I call a "begging" quality. The music makes it sound like he's begging for his woman, when he's actually talking about how his woman's on the verge of leaving him, and he knows it. He's not begging her to come back, it's almost like he's telling her that he realizes that she isn't there for him mentally.

12} Foo Fighters - Baker Street [5:35]
The best cover ever. Period, no arguments. The Foo Fighters take a cheesy song, and turn it into a rock anthem. Gone is the saxophone, they replaced it with the wail of a guitar. Like the Deftones' "Be Quiet and Drive [Far Away]," it is a song that I can play over and over and over again, and never get tired of it.

13} Scott Miller & the Commonwealth - Loving That Girl [4:28]
This will forever be M's song. Very few know whom I speak of, and I'd like to keep it that way. It epitomizes our "relationship." There were times that she wanted to be with me, other times when she didn't. Throughout I never wavered. I wanted to be with her, and didn't hide it much. A year passed, I got tired of the b.s., went away for a weekend, and purged her from my being. This song, along with Miller's other solo work and V-roys materials, really helped me through that period in my life. "Loving That Girl" also has one of my favorite lyrics of all time: "Coal turns to diamonds inside of my hands."

14} Adem - These Are Your Friends [6:35]
I first saw Adem when he opened up for Badly Drawn Boy, and was amazed by all the instruments he played. Every song seemed to bring a new, sometimes unrecognizable, instrument.

15} Sheryl Crow - Safe and Sound [5:03]
Crow is like INXS, there are some songs that I love some that I can't stand. I love this one. This version is from the 9/11 benefit concert, America: A Tribute to Heroes.

16} Rufus Wainwright - Barcelona [6:53]
Wainwright is an amazing musician. He's one of the few people I listen to that is so over the top, yet I dig everyone of his tunes. This is the most subdued track, and is amazing.

17} Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should've Come Over [6:43]
Another "begging" song. Except I think Buckley is in fact begging. I adore Buckley, and wish he was still around making music.

Until next time:
